Hampton University returned to campus after Spring Break with the debut of the new Spring 2025 initiates of the Divine Nine organizations.
Just this past weekend, HU students, along with family members, friends, and faculty gathered at the Holland Hall gymnasium to watch the new member presentations.
Holland Hall was full of cheers and screams as each organization debuted their new initiates.
“My favorite moment was seeing my friends Aliyah and Tristian join Greek life because I know they’re both hardworking individuals and a moment like that is once in a lifetime,” said Erin Connor, a third-year journalism major and film studies minor.
Various NPHC chapters at HU showcased the new members of their organizations. All five of the Divine Nine fraternities welcomed new members, along with the Zeta Xi Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc and the Rho Alpha Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
“A few members of the Debate and Forensic team crossed the organizations Zeta Phi Beta and Sigma Gamma Rho, and Phi Beta Sigma. My roommate also crossed as a Zeta. It was amazing to support all of my friends who joined greekdom,” said Phaedra Hyche, a third year political science major.
One of the highlights of this season's presentations was the new initiative into the Beta Chapter of Iota Phi Theta, Fraternity, Inc., after eight years of the chapter’s inactivity.
“It was wonderful to see, I was really proud,” said Patrice Mcabee, a third-year biology major.
Campus was buzzing as students waited to see the new member to re-active the chapter on HU’s campus.
“It was really cool that it was a solo Iota that crossed into the chapter, seeing that we haven’t seen that happen in for many years. I was just really proud,” said Mcabee.
There had been a lot of talk over the years whether or not that organization was to make their comeback here at Hampton. This year seemed to be the year.
“As a member of the Divine Nine, I really did love the fact that we finally have a full yard with Javien crossing Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated,” said Connor.
Javien Dorsey, the new initiate in the Beta Chapter of Iota Phi Theta, Fraternity Inc., is the grandson of one of the fraternity’s founders, Elias Dorsey, Jr.
“I thought it was really wonderful to see the legacy continue,” said Mcabee.
However, the real highlight for students was seeing their fellow classmates' hard work and determination pay off.
“It was great to be able to experience everyone’s presentations,” said Connor.
